Stepping Over Dollars To Pick Up Pennies

Have you ever heard the old saying, “You’re stepping over dollars to pick up pennies?” If you are like me, you have not only heard the saying but may have used it a time or two. The topic that we are covering this month ties right into the saying.

This month we will be talking about training. You’re probably asking yourself what correlation does training have to do with that saying. Having your business perform at its maximum when employees and software are involved can be a challenge. What are we talking about here? We are not just talking about software that does a function in your company. While it is working we have no complaints and think that everything is going great, or worse, what we don’t know about is not hurting us. We are talking about getting that software investment to make you more money in ways that you may not be aware of. How many people were trained when your system was installed?

Should you trust your data to someone else?

I found an article today about Carbonite, an online backup service, that is suing their supplier, Promise, due to a product that they bought that didn't work. Too bad this supplier wasn't for a door that was not closing properly. Instead they were the supplier for a RAID system that would guarantee that the backups they have would be available in case of failure. The company (Carbonite) lost 7,500 customers data when drives did fail. I would not want to be one of those customers trusting an outside source to manage my data. Read more about this at www.channelregister.co.uk.

If you are worried about your data being backed up, contact us for a quote on our preferred method of backups.

Save the Economy - Spend Money

philIn the days before automobiles, a traveler along a remote and dusty trail in the desert Southwest came upon a deep well with a hand pump under the cover of an open shed. Near the pump handle was a bucket of water with a ladle in it. It was a hot day and the water looked mighty good. There was no one around – only a hand-painted sign that read “you are welcome to the water but prime the pump before using it and leave a full bucket for the next person to come along.” The traveler didn’t know if the pump would work or if the well was dry. There was water in the bucket and he could drink it without risking its loss to prime the pump. What should the traveler do?

Murphy’s Law - "If anything can go wrong, it will.”

With the new year approaching, there are a few business topics and 2009 goals worth consideration. Many people might think of Murphy in negative terms but it is really quite the opposite. Murphy’s Law says that if something can go wrong, it will — and at the most inopportune time. Keeping Murphy in mind is the first step in making a business Murphy-proof. Murphy’s Law can seem undeniable. But do things really have to break just when the warranty expires? This is a good time to look at ways of keeping Mr. Murphy out of sight during the next year.

Not Getting What You Expected From Your Software - Part 2 of a 2 part series

Phil MartinLast issue we learned that not getting what you expect from your software is probably not the software’s fault. We talked about individual user training and in this part, we’ll examine software utilization at the organizational level. Certainly, these two are tightly intertwined; insufficient employee training will most likely result in ineffective utilization company wide. For this discussion, we’re going to look at the business’ processes and procedures.
